The Memory Petals Project is a service we provide to families who have lost a loved one.
Many times, families have an abundance of flower arrangements and they don’t always know what to do with them. We have developed a service that will help with that dilemma.
We can use the petals of flower arrangements from your loved one’s funeral service and infuse them into handmade paper, which we will then use to make mats for picture frames, ornaments or any other item a family may want.
The petals from the flower arrangements are usually clipped into smaller pieces but we can try to use a whole petal in the paper-making process as well.
If you would like to have a memento crafted by the women of Gateway, please let your funeral director know by filling out the request form. We can pick up the flower arrangement you wish to use or you can stop by Hope Sweet Hope Studios in person.
For the last month, the women of Gateway to Discovery have been working diligently to create beautiful jewelry pieces. Thanks to a donation of supplies and time from JoAnn Lee Love, the women have been exposed to a new form of art and have supplied our studio with a variety of necklaces and bracelets. Love heals and hope transforms…
That is the premise of Magdalene House in Nashville, Tennessee, a program founded by the Rev. Becca Stevens in 1997. Inspired by Magdalene’s community-living model, Gateway to Discovery opened its doors on October 21, 2013 as the first women’s residential recovery program in Fort Dodge and the only program of its kind in Iowa. The Gateway program helps homeless women recover from addiction and gain control of their lives. Women commit to two years in a community of recovery in exchange for housing, therapy, access to healthcare and opportunities for education and job training at no cost to them. Gateway to Discovery is supported solely by churches, individuals, foundations and service groups so that the program can remain faith-based with God at the center.
Our mission statement describes the program as a sanctuary to emphasize the haven that is needed for women facing social, psychological and economic factors that drive them to desperate means for survival. Addicts must overcome the peer pressure, bullying, physical abuse, sexual abuse, mental abuse, vulnerability and risk-taking behavior that led to addiction and a life on the streets. The sanctuary of Gateway to Discovery welcomes women into a compassionate and disciplined community where they can recover and rebuild their lives.
Perhaps the story of Gateway to Discovery can best be told by the first women to graduate from the program. To follow are testimonies from Josi and Holly who recently became the first to complete the two-year program! These women are part of a movement that is changing the tide of the conversation away from blame and shame towards healing. We could not be more proud of what these courageous women have accomplished in their journeys of sobriety.
The successful stories of Josi and Holly would not have been possible without your help. And we would like to help many more women! In fact, as we look towards 2016, we are planning to even more closely model the Magdalene program and expand Gateway’s services to reach women dealing with addiction who are also human trafficking victims. The additional training is ongoing and program changes are being made. We believe all of our efforts will be worth it as the lives of even more women are saved, but we cannot do it without your support.
Will you please consider supporting Gateway to Discovery so we can continue to offer women a sanctuary as they heal…at no cost to them or taxpayers? Enclosed is a donation envelope for your convenience. Additionally, food certificates, household cleaning & paper products, women’s personal care items and gently used women’s clothing are always appreciated. Please call us at 515.302.8162 for delivery or pickup of donated goods. Thank you for allowing us to share Gateway to Discovery with you! We appreciate your support!
